The dark secret linking research integrity and publication ethics
9:40 AM - 10:05 AM
Where does research integrity end and publication ethics start? The two concepts, while distinct, are increasingly overlapping as research is published ever more quickly and in multiple forms. At the nexus of the two is the issue of predatory publishing, which negatively impacts researchers, funders, universities and publishers alike, as well as damaging trust in academic research to the detriment of society and the public good. Simon Linacre (Director of International Marketing and Development at Cabells) will outline the current problems posed by predatory journals with specific reference to the coronavirus pandemic and medical publishing, propose practical ways to mitigate the problems being caused, and suggest that a concerted effort is required by all stakeholders to prevent further damage being done to the scholarly communications ecosystem.
